Do you remember my post about effective morning routines? (If you haven’t checked that out, here you go: Start Right)


But you know what, an effective night routine is also equally important. How you settle in, and the way you manage your evening routine can have an impact. Think about it: the way you wind down can affect your sleep, and the following day as well! What I’ll be sharing today is something most of us are aware of but let’s see if we really benefitting from them.


So, if you want a better shot at having a ‘good’ night, here’s how to end your day on a positive note.


1. Cut ties with gadgets

Your phone, tablet or TV can actually lead to less productive sleep. You’re much better off staying away from the gadgets for at least an hour before bed. So, what can I do instead? You may consider reading a good book or having a conversation with a family member.

2. Exercise

Physical exertion during the day can help the mind slip into calmer sleeping patterns, and you’ll wake up feeling all fresh and positive.

3. Drink something that soothes

There are plenty of non-caffeinated drinks that can help you fall asleep naturally. A cup of warm milk, a mixture of water and honey or chamomile tea are few easy options to start with.

4. Prepare your environment

As part of your bedtime routine, get your environment prepared for sleep. This includes making sure it’s dark in your room, and the temperature is comfortable. Make sure the clothes you wear are soft, loose, and non-suffocating. Basically, unplanned sleep routines like falling asleep while reading or sitting are not beneficial for your body and mind.

5. Review your day

Here’s the key. Start by focusing on what you did right today- praise yourself for that, it is really important to keep you going. Now, gently slide into the areas you feel you messed up, reflect on these. Being your own support and critic can always help you weigh the ups and downs effectively. The mantra being: Review. Reflect. Revamp.


6. Grow gratitude

Being thankful for the day, the people you met and the situations you faced is really very-very important. No matter how the day was: Great, Mediocre, Usual, or Hard, it has played its own role in shaping you. Make sure to practice gratitude for what you are blessed because there is always someone who is less fortunate than you. Gratitude kills the sense of for-grantedness.


7. Time for self-care!

Do you invest sometime on yourself before going to bed? Trust me, simple methods like cleansing, moisturizing and nourishing your skin is very fruitful in the long run. Self-care is a key factor in developing a positive mind-set.

8. Plan tomorrow

List out a couple of things you ‘must’ do tomorrow. This helps your mind sleep with a sense of scheduling and zeal. You tend to wake up more focused on the day when you plan it in advance. Well, it is to be noted that this works for some and may not for others. But there’s no harm in trying, right?

9. Do you want to plan further?

Great! Make sure you lay down your clothes for tomorrow and set your bag or briefcase. This makes room for hassle-free mornings and allows you to touch the details before starting your day.

10. Lastly, cool down

Make sure you do the ‘breathe in and breathe out’ till your body loosens up and your mind calms down. It is a way you can stop being so hard on yourself and see tomorrow as a new day with new possibilities.
